Christopher pushed the vacuum back and forth over the living room floor, a list of things to get finished before Stephanie arrived zipping through his brain.

“Bro.” Ryan yelled over the noise and tapped on Christopher’s shoulder.

He jolted and flipped the switch. “What?”

“What’s going on? You got a hot date I don’t know about?”

“Date? Please.” Christopher forced himself to stop talking before he started babbling. Ryan was a big fan of reading into things. “What about you?”

“Me? Nah. Thought I might hit the gym again. It’s becoming a Friday night thing for me, you know?” Ryan laughed. “Stephanie coming over to talk strategy?”

“Last time I talked to her, that was the plan.” Christopher tried for a nonchalant shrug. “When do you and Jess find time to work on your stuff?”

“Here and there. I’ll probably give her a call after I work out. But we’ve got a leg up on this morale thing—everyone loves working in cyber. You don’t last long there if you don’t.”

Christopher snorted. Not so in government solutions. He still hadn’t managed to come up with any ideas. “Don’t you still need an event?”

“Oh, sure. But c’mon. How hard is that going to be, really? We just have to get all the folks who love their jobs already to do something together. Easy peasy.”

“Well. Good for you.” Christopher frowned. Was he overthinking things? Was Stephanie? Even if they were, it didn’t give him any ideas of what to suggest for their morale booster. He flipped the vacuum back on and got back to work.

Ryan shook his head before heading out.

When the condo was clean—or, well, cleaner, at least—Christopher stowed everything away and headed into the kitchen. Stephanie had talked him into carryout again—it made sense, since they did need to work on their plan—but he wanted to take her out somewhere nice. A real date. One where they didn’t have to talk about work that was hanging over their heads.

They’d get there eventually.

At least Wednesday had been sort of like that. They’d gone to dinner at the deli before prayer meeting. But still they’d had their own cars and had come and gone separately. What would it take to get her to let him pick her up and take her out?

He filled a glass with ice and poured lemonade from the plastic pitcher in the fridge. Anything that he could do with his hands would be a good thing. Why was he nervous? It was just Stephanie. They’d been getting together every day at work and every Friday in the evening for a month. This was no different.

He snorted.

It was so different. This was their first official date. And it wasn’t even a good one. Why had he let her talk him out of dinner out somewhere fancy? Or even casual. Something nicer than hanging out at his table like they were used to doing. The way this was going, they’d end up talking about work, too.

Ugh.

How lame could he get?

The knock on the door jolted him out of his spiraling self-doubt.
